China Is Fueling America’s Fentanyl Crisis
At A Common Sense America, we call it like it is: the biggest adversary in our war against fentanyl isn’t just the traffickers in our neighborhoods; it’s China.
The Chinese Communist Party is the primary source of the precursor chemicals Mexican cartels use to manufacture fentanyl. That poison is then smuggled across our southern border and into our communities. The result? Deadly overdoses, shattered families, and a constant strain on our law enforcement.
Law Enforcement on the Front Lines
In Cincinnati this week, FBI Director Kash Patel announced a major fentanyl trafficking bust. Charges were brought against several Chinese nationals accused of conspiring to ship fentanyl precursors into the United States. Thanks to the work of federal agents and local police, another pipeline of poison was shut down.
That’s what courage looks like.
Law enforcement officers standing between our families and a deadly drug that destroys everything it touches. They deserve every ounce of our gratitude. But the truth is, even the bravest law enforcement officers can’t stop the flood unless America addresses the source. And the source is China.
Congress Takes Action
That’s why the House of Representatives was right to pass Congressman Pat Ryan’s Stop Chinese Fentanyl Act. This commonsense, bipartisan bill takes direct aim at the Chinese Communist Party and the chemical companies enabling cartels. It expands sanctions, blocks access to the U.S. financial system, and imposes serious penalties on anyone who profits from fentanyl’s destruction.
What makes this especially powerful is that it passed with broad bipartisan support. Republicans and Democrats came together to say with one voice: China will not continue to profit off American deaths without consequences. In a time when Washington rarely agrees on anything, Congress agreed on this because keeping fentanyl off our streets is not a partisan issue. It’s a matter of national security.
A Commonsense Path Forward
The fentanyl crisis is far from over. Narcan may save lives, but it doesn’t solve the problem. To truly defeat fentanyl, America must:
- Target supply chains in China—cut them off before precursors reach the cartels
- Support law enforcement—give our officers the tools, training, and resources they need
- Increase penalties for traffickers—send the message that dealing fentanyl is dealing death
The Bottom Line
America is under attack, and the weapon is fentanyl. Our adversary is China, and their partners are the cartels. We applaud the FBI and local law enforcement for their bravery in Cincinnati, and we applaud Congress, both Republicans and Democrats alike, for passing the Stop Chinese Fentanyl Act.
Now it’s time for the Senate to act. Because until China is held accountable, the flow of fentanyl won’t stop and neither will the destruction it brings to our communities.
This isn’t just a drug crisis. This is a fight for America’s safety. And it’s a fight we must win.
